What is American studies?

American studies is an interdisciplinary studies field that examines American history, American literature, and American culture. It's part of the humanities field and incorporates a variety of disciplines. Although most scholarship typically follows the United States, recent studies have expanded far beyond the country's borders.

The use of the term "American" is controversial, but the name continues to be standard. The field also includes subfields like African American studies, Native American studies, Asian American studies, and topics like material culture or U.S. history. In some cases, American studies is also an exploration of imperialism.
